چکیده
What is the electric field used for? Strongly electric fish have an electric organ discharge that is powerful enough to stun prey and to discourage potential predators. The brief, intermittent discharge pulses generated by strongly electric fish can range up to several hundred volts. In contrast, weakly electric fish generate a discharge that is typically less than a single volt. These discharges are too weak to stun prey, but are used for navigation, object detection (electrolocation) and communication with other electric fish (electrocommunication). These abilities are particularly useful since many electric fish are nocturnal and live in turbid waters.

Down-Regulation of Desmosomes in Cultured Cells: The Roles of PKC, Microtubules and Lysosomal/Proteasomal Degradation
Desmosomes are intercellular adhesive junctions of major importance for tissue integrity. To allow cell motility and migration they are down-regulated in epidermal wound healing. Electron microscopy indicates that whole desmosomes are internalised by cells in tissues, but the mechanism of down-regulation is unclear. In this paper we provide an overview of the internalisation of half-desmosomes ...
متن کاملHyper-adhesion in desmosomes: its regulation in wound healing and possible relationship to cadherin crystal structure.
The resistance of tissues to physical stress is dependent upon strong cell-cell adhesion in which desmosomes play a crucial role. We propose that desmosomes fulfil this function by adopting a more strongly adhesive state, hyper-adhesion, than other junctions. We show that the hyper-adhesive desmosomes in epidermis resist disruption by ethylene glycol bis(2-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N'N'-tetraacetic...
متن کاملDesmosomes from a structural perspective.
Desmosomes are cell-cell junctions responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of tissues by resisting shear forces. Defects result in diseases of mechanically challenged tissues such as skin and heart. The architectural design represents the key to understanding the strength and durability inherent to desmosomes. A number of different proteins contribute to this architecture, and X-ra...
متن کاملDesmosomes: interconnected calcium-dependent structures of remarkable stability with significant integral membrane protein turnover.
Desmosomes are prominent cell adhesion structures that are major stabilizing elements, together with the attached cytoskeletal intermediate filament network, of the cytokeratin type in epithelial tissues. To examine desmosome dynamics in tightly coupled cells and in situations of decreased adhesion, fluorescent desmosomal cadherin desmocollin 2a (Dsc2a) chimeras were stably expressed in human h...
متن کاملCryoelectron tomography of isolated desmosomes.
Desmosomes are a complex assembly of protein molecules that form at the cell surface and mediate cell-cell adhesion. Much is known about the composition of desmosomes and there is an established consensus for the location of and interactions between constituent proteins within the assembly. Furthermore, X-ray crystallography has determined atomic structures of isolated domains from several cons...
متن کاملPemphigus vulgaris antigen, a desmoglein type of cadherin, is localized within keratinocyte desmosomes
Pemphigus vulgaris antigen (PVA) is a member of the desmoglein subfamily of cadherin cell adhesion molecules. Because autoantibodies in this disease cause blisters due to loss of epidermal cell adhesion, and because desmoglein is found in the desmosome cell adhesion junction, we wanted to determine if PVA is also found in desmosomes. By immunofluorescence, PV IgG bound, in a dotted pattern, to ...
